About us

Our History

The land where our clubhouse and golf course now stand is rich with history, long connected to both the First Nations peoples and the early days of colonization. The Dharug people of the Blue Mountains originally inhabited this area, while the Gundungara people also moved into the region along the Nepean River. Jamieson Creek, which runs through the front of our present clubhouse, was used by the Traditional Owners to sharpen their tools on the rocks, leaving a legacy that still echoes through the land today.

In the early 19th century, Sir Francis Forbes, Australia’s first Chief Justice, established a country retreat named Edinglassie on his land grant. This estate was later subdivided, and in 1914, Herman Paul Leopold (Leo) Buring purchased a significant portion of the land. Leo Buring built his home and named it Leonay, a combination of his and his wife Ida’s nicknames. Recognising the potential for golf in the area, Leo began designing the Leonay Country Club in 1937, featuring a 19-hole golf course with lush fairways and greens.

Although the club’s activities were interrupted by World War II, the beautiful landscape and the vision of Leo Buring remains alive.

Today, visitors can still see the remnants of old grape terraces on our fairways and hear the bellbirds echoing overhead, a reminder of the rich history and natural beauty that continues to define the Club today.
